If you’re anything like me, you’ll know that we don’t really have the time for aches, pains, DOMS or injuries. Working out 5 or 6 days a week, with a full time job, an apartment to look after, a blog to keep updated and a life to live doesn’t exactly give us much time to rest, recover and recuperate either. So when I heard of CRYOtherapy opening up in Abu Dhabi, I was well and truly interested.
What is CRYOtherapy?
CRYOtherapy is an innovative treatment where the body is briefly exposed to very cold temperatures ranging from -140°C to -180°C in order to stimulate multiple health, fitness, weight-loss, healing, and beauty benefits. Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used this form of localized cold therapy to alleviate pain and inflammation. In 1978, Japanese doctor Toshimo Yamaguchi further developed the idea and discovered that decreasing the temperature of his patients’ skin reduced the pain they felt during joint manipulation treatments.
My first encounter of CRYOtherapy was at the Etisalat Fitness Festival back in November, where I had a trial CRYO facial, which claims to activate the collagen in the skin for improved elasticity & a smoother appearance. It was delightfully refreshing and so quick that I could hardly believe it was over!
Fast forward a few months, and with CRYO opening a center in Abu Dhabi, I was keen to try the full body CRYOtherapy. It appealed to me because of the amazing benefits it boasted for both a pre-workout and post-workout treatment…
– CRYO burns 500-800 calories per session
– Triples metabolic rate
– Eliminates water retention
– Decreases recovery time by over 50%
– Reduces DOMS (yes please!!!!)
– Increases energy & performance
– Releases endorphins
– Improves sleep
…and that’s just a few! Read about all of the benefits of CRYOtherapy here.
I was a little bit nervous heading in on day 1, but everyone at the center was absolutely lovely and explained the whole process to me before I even left the reception area. When I was happy and ready to go, I was shown to a changing room with my own private locker, filled with various items to get changed into. You can keep your own underwear on, or you can put on the disposable ones available to you. Team that with thick ski socks and rubber shoes, and I was ready to go..!
Then on to the next room.. you could see the condensation coming from the top of the CRYOtherapy machine as it was cooled ready to use, and as soon as it was down to temperature it was time to jump in. You’re never left alone in the therapy room, everything is very controlled, so I felt super-safe throughout all of my treatments. Holding a conversation was probably the best way to momentarily forget that I was practically naked in Antarctica, so I talked with the therapist about the benefits that I’d read about and how she had found her treatments so far.
After three quick minutes, the treatment is done and I was shuffled straight back into the dressing gown (which felt oh so lovely and warm). A few squats or a few minutes on the cross-trainer to warm up and voila! That’s the treatment over. We started off on day 1 at minus 140 degrees Celcius, and by my 4th treatment a few days later, we had got down to the lowest temperature we could go, minus 180 degrees!! A delightful green tea waited for me once I was dressed, and I was able to sit and relax until I was ready to get on with the rest of my day…
The night after the first treatment, I slept like a baby! I never sleep all the way through, always waking up before my alarm, but this time I was delightfully surprised to wake up to the jingle from my phone. During the treatment week, I was in the middle of brand new training sessions with my own Personal Trainer (read all about that here) so I was also very happy to wake up with minimal (if any) aches or pains. As the week went on and I had further treatments, I was able to train more and still feel energized. I headed out to Yas Marina Circuit twice, and got through all of my PT sessions. It was a great week for fitness – surely helped by the CRYOtherapy sessions I was having.
There’s so many different treatments you can have at CRYO, take a look at the full list here.
I think that CRYOtherapy could be really fabulous for performance, muscle repair, weight loss and all over wellness if used regularly alongside a fit and healthy lifestyle. It’s definitely a luxury treatment, but one that I would love to include into my schedule.
