We thought we’d round off this weekend by heading to Rogo’s Rollercoaster Restaurant in Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi.
Where all good things come from above…
We’d seen this funny little restaurant on our preview trip, and we’d always said that we’d love to give it a go. Such a great concept; sit at the bottom of a little rollercoaster track and have your food delivered by corkscrew and loop-the-loops!
Even the way we ordered was pretty cool! Our server came over to explain everything to us (which was greatly appreciated) and then we were on our way. We picked up a touch screen tablet each from underneath our table, went through the menu and chose our dishes. The system worked well, the tablets were quick, and there were photos of all of the meals with a full explanation along side. The restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, but I’d hope that their network would be strong enough to cope if ALL of the tables were full and ALL of the tablets were being used at the same time.
Thai Fishcakes with Sweet Chilli Sauce
Chicken Pesto Pasta
Even our drinks came on the rollercoasters!!
You may be wondering how it even works? Well, were we too – and so it was great to sit and watch all of the little carriages zoom down the tracks and appear in front of us. Everything was served in containers like in the pictures above, and they were very cleverly strapped onto the carriages so they could zip and zoom to their hearts content. Drinks were served in ‘jam jars’ or bottles too, and it was a lot of fun to watch.
Because of the circus of what was going on around us, and the fact that the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, the wait for food was totally non-existent. Starters came, and we were taking the last bite of these when the main dishes rattled towards us.
I’d read somewhere that the food was so-so, and the rollercoasters were the only highlight – but we didn’t find this to be true at all. Our starters were simple dishes, but extremely tasty, and our main courses were hearty and flavourful. Considering everything comes hurtling through the restaurant at a pretty good pace – don’t expect michelin star presentation, but we still found that our meals arrived at our seats looking surprisingly appealing.
The service we received was great, and there were always staff on hand to help us or explain how to get the food off of the tracks and onto our table. The food was prompt and delicious, and we enjoyed watching other tables receive their meals, as not one roller coaster was the same.
Our bill came to 256 AED, and this equates to roughly £44.00. Not to bad for two drinks, two starters and two mains.
It’s definitely somewhere I’d love to go again, and definitely somewhere to take children for a fun at dinner time. The food’s great, there’s a lot of choice, and the atmosphere is awesome!
